April 19, 2017 - Superintendent’s Update

Posted by Dr. Amy J. Carter, Superintendent in General  |  Post a comment

Greetings Wildcat Supporters,

I hope that you enjoyed the Easter weekend and got a chance to spend time with family and friends! As you know, this was our last break until the end of school.

As we return from the break, we are kicking off the final quarter of the game! This time of year is often referenced as the most important part of the year as our students have the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of all the content they have learned through the course of the year. With that thought, please allow me to share a few updates:

Academic Excellence:

-Our third graders began state testing this week with the Third Grade Gateway Exam. Please help me commend our third grade teachers for preparing our students to excel. They have worked tirelessly to prepare our third grades for a more rigorous test than they have seen in previous years.

Extra-Curricular Excellence:

-Congratulations to the MHS Girls Powerlifting Team for earning the Class III State Championship! The MHS Girls Powerlifting Team has established a legacy of excellence that continues with this win which marks their eighth championship in the last ten years. Congratulations to these outstanding student-athletes and their coaches - Coach Hampton and Coach Hill.

-I was so pleased to be able to recognize the MHS Academic Team, Girls Powerlifting Team, and Boys Basketball Team for their outstanding seasons last night during the April Meeting of the MPSD Board of Trustees. These student-athletes and their coaches have really worked hard this year, and they have shined on a state and national level.

Human Resources Updates:

A special thanks to those educators who returned your letters of intent. Contracts will be distributed by the first week of May. It is my hope that we can continue to elevate the quality of education provided to the students of Meridian together. As you know, the classroom teacher is the most influential factor in a child's education as they spend more time with many of our students than their parents for various reasons.

Early Release PLC Wednesdays:

The Board of Trustees voted to approve the Early Release PLC Wednesdays at the board meeting last night, so I will provide more information on this soon.

Bomb Threats Last Week:

I want to thank the teachers and administrators of Meridian High School again for their patience and professionalism during the bomb threats last week. It is my goal, along with MHS administration, to ensure that distractions of this nature have minimal impact on the learning environment.

Maximizing the Final Weeks of School:

-Teacher Attendance- As we move into peak testing season, I am encouraging teachers to focus on being here for the students as much as possible.

-Active Supervision- To ensure that we maintain safe and orderly schools, it is critical that teachers help keep students on task and actively monitor and supervise students.

-Beyond Grade Level Content - While on Break, I was browsing through one of my favorite stores, Tuesday Morning, and I bumped into one of colleagues. We briefly discussed the best way to utilize the final weeks of school after testing, and I have encouraged teachers to push students beyond grade level content and exploration projects. We want to provide them with a chance to problem solve, think critically, and share oral presentations. I even suggested for teachers to consider cursive writing for the younger students. We are trying to keep student’s minds engaged for the final weeks of school to ensure we are maximizing every moment we have as we prepare them for their next experiences.

I appreciate each of you and your support of our students so much. Please join me in thanking our teachers as often as possible for the many sacrifices they make to ensure our students receive a high quality education.

Have a great week,

Dr. Carter
