Dr. Taylor's Blog - On a Positive Note...

Wildcat Parents and Community Members,

I want to thank everyone who participated in the Meridian ROARS event and helped make it such a huge success! Meridian ROARS (Reaching Out to Achieve Reading Success) was the official District kick-off event for our intense focus on literacy this year. There were over 200 parents and staff and over 100 students in attendance last night, and I am so proud of the support that the district, parents, and community showed for the importance of reading.

I would like to give a special thanks to the following people:

- City of Meridian for helping sponsor the event
-Mayor Bland for donating a Kindle as a door prize
-Boys and Girls Club for donating a Kindle as a door prize
-MPSD Federal Programs for donating books and reading fair supplies for door prizes
-All of the schools and departments that set up tables to provide helpful information for parents – Crestwood, Oakland Heights, Parkview, Poplar Springs, T.J. Harris Upper and Lower, West Hills, Meridian High Literacy Committee and Library, Federal Programs, Parent Resource Center, Office of Exceptional Child Education, Magnolia, Office of Technology, United Way’s Imagination Library, and the YET Program
-Guest Speakers: Mayor Percy Bland, Rev. Gary Houston, and Councilwoman Kim Houston
-Student Performances:
*Mr. Hubbard and Mrs. Hines’s students Demarcus McFarland and S’antrelle McGlothin for their
               dramatic readings
*Mrs. Young and Mrs. Turnage’s third grade students for their reader’s theatre
*Mrs. Operton and Mrs. Evins’s fourth grade students for their choral reading
-And, last but certainly not least, Ms. Miles and the Instructional Specialists for their hard work to put the event together

Meridian ROARS proved that the parents and community members are behind MPSD, and that encouragement will help us continue to work hard to move our students forward. I know that if we all work together and work hard and smart, we can achieve another successful school year.

Always Believe in Blue,
Dr. Taylor
