Music in Our Schools Month Concert - Sat, March 19

March has been officially designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM). This is the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. MIOSM began as a single statewide celebration in 1973, and has grown over the decades to encompass a day, then a week, and then in 1985 to become a month long celebration of school music. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that schools are where all children should have access to music. MIOSM is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community, and to display the benefits that school music brings to students of all ages.

In honor of MIOSM, the elementary music and middle and high school choir classes of the Meridian Public School District have partnered to present a concert! On Saturday, March 19th at 1:30 p.m., selected students from ten of the Meridian Public School District campuses will present a concert of quality, choral repertoire at Meridian High School in the Auditorium. Through this opportunity, we are able to formally recognize the value of music education in public schools, especially in the Meridian Public School District.

If you would like any more information about this concert, or about the nationwide celebration of MIOSM, please contact Michelle Cook, Music Specialist at Parkview Elementary (mcook@mpsdk12.net.)
