------ Meridian High School Boasts Ten Scholastic Art Award Winners
The Scholastic Art Awards have been celebrated for 88 years as a unique presence in the nation’s classrooms by identifying and documenting outstanding achievements of young artists. Meridian High School has had another significant showing this year with 14 winning pieces of artwork: two Silver Key and twelve Honorable Mention representing ten of the school’s art students. Three MHS teachers submitted their student work for the judging: Steve Westbrook, Jamie Lee Williams, and Marsha Iverson.
The Mississippi Museum of Art hosts the Mississippi Regional Competition each year, and students from middle, junior high, and senior high schools from across the state participate in the competition. More than 2,000 entries are judged by a panel of judges over a course of several days in a wide variety of categories: painting, drawing, mixed media, photography, sculpture, graphic design, animation, and textile fiber design, as well as art and photography portfolios. In this search, judges look for originality, skill and technique, and evidence of the emergence of a personal/artistic vision and style. All Silver Key and Gold Key winners are on display at the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson from February 4 until April 15, 2012 when all awards will be presented to the students. Honorable mention artwork is on display in the MHS library.
The following Meridian High School students received awards in the Mississippi Regional Art competition:

------ Wildcat Band Selected for Inaugural Parade
“The Greatest Band in All the Land," Meridian High School, was one of 25 high school and college bands selected to march in the Governor's Inaugural Parade which will take place on Saturday, January 21. The newly elected Governor Phil Bryant hand-picked the bands to represent the state, and the Wildcat band is extremely excited and proud to be a part of this prestigious event. Among the bands selected are: University of Southern Mississippi, Brandon High School, Jones County Junior College, Olive Branch High School, Pearl High School, University of Mississippi, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, and Mississippi State University.
Congratulations Wildcats!
------ Arts Integration at Parkview Elementary
Parkview Elementary recently hosted a Puppet Arts Theatre production of “Peter and the Wolf.”
Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" is an exciting way to introduce children to classical music and puppetry. The world-famous musical tale has been performed often, but very rarely using the unique Czech black theatre technique. This complex but stunning style of presentation allows complete freedom of movement for the almost-life-size puppets who interact on stage with a real-life narrator to create a feel of a big screen animated cartoon.
This performance was made possible, in part, by a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission.
------ MHS Wildcat Players Ranked ‘Excellent’ at the MS Theatre Association North State Festival

------ Carver Middle School Band Student Chosen for Mississippi Bandmasters State Band Clinic
Congratulations to Clayton Keeton, a Carver Middle School trumpeter, who was chosen to perform at the Mississippi Bandmasters State Band Clinic in Natchez, MS. Clayton traveled with the Meridian Band staff and three other students to audition and perform with band students from across the state on December 7 through 10. Carver Band Director Amber Roland says "Clayton represented his band and the school very well during our trip to State Band Clinic. I am very proud of this young man, and I am excited to watch him grow as a musician as he prepares to audition for the high school band in May 2012."
------ Carver Middle School Band Gives to Love’s Kitchen
In the spirit of Good King Wenceslas, the Carver Middle School Band chose to sponsor a local charity as they prepared for their Christmas performances this December. Final donations of canned goods and various pantry items were organized at the conclusion of their December 14th Christmas Concert. With the help of band students and Carver faculty, the Band was excited to donate approximately 100 cans and 14 bags of rice/beans to Love's Kitchen.
