Poplar Springs Elementary will Host Local Writer and Storyteller Anne McKee

Anne McKee, local writer and storyteller, will help Poplar Springs Elementary kick-off the third grade Social Studies unit which focuses on our hometown of Meridian. She will meet with students Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 10:15 a.m. to share historic photos of Meridian from her book “Historic Photos of Mississippi.” This study will culminate with an arts integrated program to celebrate the birthday of Meridian on Feb. 10, 2012.

Improvements to School Buildings

Several renovations took place over the summer to improve our school facilities.

Air-conditioning was installed in the auditorium at Magnolia Middle School and in the auditorium shared by West Hills Elementary School and Northwest Middle School.

The restrooms were renovated at Northwest Middle School, Parkview Elementary School, and the Upper and Lower Campuses of Harris Elementary School.

Carver Middle School’s gymnasium/auditorium is being equipped with air conditioning and a new floor. Renovations at Carver are expected to be complete in early September.

The front side of Marion Park Alternative School saw major renovations including new floors, ceilings, walls, and restrooms.

Security Cameras Installed at Schools

All schools in the district now have security cameras and software to monitor activity. Meridian High School was the first to utilize a camera system, but now all of our schools have them in place. These security measures were put in place as another step toward reaching our goal of establishing safe and orderly schools.

We are also in the process of installing security cameras on our school buses to ensure safe and orderly travel for students to and from school. Security cameras have already been installed on ten buses, and we are working diligently to complete installation for the rest of our bus fleet.
