Michelle West, Meridian High AP Chemistry Teacher, Wins Golden Apple Award

Each month an outstanding teacher in the East Mississippi and West Alabama area is presented with the Golden Apple Award honoring his or her commitment to excellence in the classroom.

Michelle West, Meridian High School Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry teacher, was recently surprised in her classroom with the October Golden Apple Award. What makes this even more special is that West’s student, Rae’Jean Spears, nominated her for the prestigious honor.

West received the Golden Apple, $300 check, and $1,000 for classroom supplies.

OfficeMax Makes a Day Better for Oakland Heights Teacher Elise Dickerson

Oakland Heights teacher Elise Dickerson was recently surprised by her students, Principal Barbara Young, and OfficeMax representative with over $1,000 in school supplies as the winner of the OfficeMax “A Day Made Better.” She was also awarded her own laminating machine, desk chair, and digital camera.

MPSD Students Participate in the Meridian Housing Authority’s East End Revitalization Efforts

The Meridian Housing Authority received the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Choice Neighborhoods Planning grant to work toward the revitalization of George Reese Court in the East End Community, and MPSD students have had the distinct honor of participating in this process.

In October, Magnolia Middle School Principal Angela McQuarley and Magnolia students participated in the ribbon cutting for the East End Police Sub Station by leading the Pledge of Allegiance and introducing Meridian’s new Police Chief James Reed.

Today, Meridian High School JROTC and Band members led the “March for a Health East End” and Pledge of Allegiance as well as providing special entertainment.

A special thanks to these Magnolia and Meridian High students and leaders for representing the Meridian Public School District so well in our community!

Nine MHS Students Selected for Leadership Lauderdale Youth Program 

Congratulations to nine Meridian High School students for being selected to participate in the 2012-13 Leadership Lauderdale Youth Program.

2012-13 Leadership Lauderdale Youth participants from MHS include: Ali Acord, Katie Bruister, Zach Corey, Madeline Griffin, Pearson Kelly, Claire McCraw, Caroline McGinnis, Amanda Price, and Tykia Watts.

The mission of Leadership Lauderdale Youth is to develop youth leadership in Lauderdale County by providing structured opportunities for interaction with other youth, as well as community leaders, and by providing for growth in understanding of character development issues, personal leadership styles and community responsibilities.

The youth participants are juniors in high school with a 2.5 or better grade point average, and they are chosen for the program based on an application, letters of reference, signature of principal and parents, and a typed essay.

Northwest Middle School students and teachers will be treated to two arts-integrated activities -Tammy Stanford-Williams will present a dance workshop which serves as art integration into the math and science curriculum, and Terrence Roberts will present “The Art of Storytelling” to Language Arts classes which integrates literacy, math, and social skills. They both will hold after-school workshops for the teachers. Northwest Middle School is a MS Arts Commission Whole Arts School.

American Educator’s Week Retired Teachers Luncheon

MPSD will honor retired teachers in the East Central Mississippi Retired Educators Association with a luncheon. The food will be prepared by the Ross Collins Culinary and Food Service students. Students from the MHS F.I.S.H club, MHS Lamplighters Choral Performance group, MHS Art, and Ross Collins Child Care Center will make special presentations.

Magnolia Middle School teachers and students will participate in the Turkey Trot which is a one mile fun run around Magnolia Middle and Parkview Elementary Schools to promote health and fitness. The first place winner receives a turkey, second place wins a pie, and third place takes home a bag of apples.
