Mark Your Calendar! MPSD Parent University: The Compass – Our Roadmap to Success

The Meridian Public School District will be hosting the first Parent University of the 2015-16 school year entitled “The Compass – Our Roadmap to Success” on Tuesday, September 22 at 6 p.m. in the MCC Dulaney Center. This event will feature information on MPSD’s new direction, feature student performances, offer opportunities to win door prizes, and much more! You don’t want to miss this Parent University, so mark September 22 on your calendar!

MHS Homecoming Parade Applications Due Today!

The Meridian High School Homecoming Parade will be held on Thursday, September 24 at 5:30 p.m. If your school, club, or organization would like to participate by having a float in the parade, the applications are due by the end of the day today (Friday, September 18). For the parade application, please click here.

There will be a Parade Float Sponsors meeting on Monday, September 21 at 5:30 p.m.

Meridian High School Homecoming Week

Meridian High School Homecoming is next week, and the 2016 theme is “Hunt or Be Hunted.” There are plenty of ways that you can be involved:

Dress Up Days –
-Monday – America Day – wear patriotic items
-Tuesday – Team Tuesday – wear your favorite team’s shirt or jersey
-Wednesday – Color Wednesday – each grade wears their color (freshmen – lime green, sophomores – purple, juniors – black, seniors – yellow, and faculty and staff – orange)
-Thursday – Hunt or Be Hunted – wear the attire of a hunter
-Friday – Spirit Day – wear your homecoming t-shirts or other MHS spirit shirts
*Jeans are allowed if students are wearing the day’s attire. If not, they must wear school uniform.

Fundraisers –
As part of the 2016 Homecoming activities, students are raising money for charity. Collection boxes are located in English and Social Studies classrooms.

Freshmen – St. Jude
Sophomores – American Cancer Society
Juniors – Alzheimer’s Association
Seniors – Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
Faculty and Staff – Diabetes Association

Powder Puff Game -
The 3rd annual Powder Puff Game will take place on Monday, September 21 at 6:00 p.m. in Ray Stadium. The admission is $2.00.

Homecoming Parade -
The Homecoming Parade is Thursday, September 24. Participants should begin lining up in front of Central Office at 4:30 p.m., and the parade begins at 5:30 p.m. The parade route will start at Central Office and end at City Hall. The Homecoming King will be crowned during the Pep Rally in front of City Hall.

Homecoming Pep Rally –
The Pep Rally will be held on Friday, September 25 at 3:00 p.m. in the MHS Boys Gym. The Homecoming Court will be presented during the Pep Rally.

Homecoming Game –
The MHS Wildcats will take on Jim Hill on Friday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. in Ray Stadium. During half time, the Homecoming Court will be presented and Queen will be crowned.

NEA President Visited MPSD on “Back to School” Tour

The Meridian Public School District was honored to host National Education Association President Lily Eskelsen Garcia in Meridian this week during her “Back to School” tour across the Southeast!

President Eskelsen Garcia along with the Mississippi Association of Educators President, Associate Executive Director, and staff members greeted teachers with breakfast and visited classrooms at Crestwood Elementary School and toured and visited classrooms at Meridian High School.

2015-16 Reading Fair

The Office of Instructional Support is pleased to announce our participation in the annual Mississippi Reading Fair. The state Reading Fair provides students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade the opportunity to share their favorite book through a story board display.

Students have the option of entering projects individually, with peers, or with family members.

Each school will set its own date for a school Reading Fair. First place school winners will advance to the District Reading Fair. The district level Reading Fair will be held January 21, 2016.

Dual Credit Continues

Dr. Taylor, MPSD Superintendent, signed an agreement recently with Meridian Community College to continue offering Dual Credit classes to Meridian High School students.

Dual credit classes allow high school students to earn college credit while earning credit toward a high school diploma. Dual credit classes offered at MHS and Ross Collins include academic courses such as College Algebra and English Composition as well as Career and Technical classes such as Engineering, Marketing, and Welding.

New Bridge at T.J. Harris Lower

Through the Safe Routes to School Program, the City of Meridian and the Mississippi Department of Transportation donated a walking bridge to help students safely walk to and from school at T.J. Harris.

Northwest Middle School to Create Outdoor Learning Centers

Thanks to a $1,000 donation from Direct Auto and Life Insurance Company, Northwest Middle School will be creating two outdoor learning centers in the existing courtyard areas. The centers will extend the learning environment from the four walls of the classroom and will concentrate on integrating Science, Math, and Language Arts in an engaging, real-life setting.

Golden Apple Award Nominations

MPSD is pleased to have five teachers from our district awarded Golden Apples since the program began at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year. The Golden Apple Awards will continue this year, so nominate your favorite teacher by visiting either or and clicking on the Golden Apple logo.
Nominations can be submitted by parents, faculty, or community members, as well as past and present students, so let’s use this opportunity to highlight the talent in our District!
