MPSD Fall Break

Students will be out of school for Fall Break on Friday, October 9, Monday, October 12, and Tuesday, October 13.

Teachers will participate in professional development on Friday, October 9.

Barbara Young Named 2015-16 MPSD Administrator of the Year

The Meridian Public School District is pleased to announce that Barbara Young, Principal of Oakland Heights Elementary School, has been named the 2015-16 Administrator of the Year. Way to go Ms. Young! We are so proud of you!

MPSD Recognizes Teachers with Three Years of Perfect Attendance

The Meridian Public School District recently recognized the following seven full-time teachers for perfect attendance during the 2012-13, 2013-14, and 2014-15 school years:

September Teachers of the Month – LaMaresha Johnson and Jonathan Brown

Congratulations to Ms. Johnson, West Hills Elementary School, and Mr. Brown, Northwest Middle School, who were recently honored with a surprise classroom visit, flowers/gift basket, and $25 gift card.

West Hills – LaMaresha Johnson
Ms. Johnson is a Kindergarten teacher at West Hills Elementary School. Ms. Johnson was selected as Teacher of the Month for her dedication and energy demonstrated to the West Hills family. She goes above and beyond to meet the individual needs of her students on a daily basis.

Northwest – Jonathan Brown
Mr. Brown teaches seventh grade Language Arts at Northwest Middle School. He was chosen for this honor because of his dedication to mentoring new teachers throughout the summer and beginning of the school year. Mr. Brown works very hard and is dedicated to Northwest which is evidenced by three consecutive years of perfect attendance.

Mayor Percy Bland, Meridian Parks and Recreation Director Kelvin McGruder, and local businesses, Cartoons and Balloons and Nino's Daycare, will be recognizing an outstanding teacher or staff member from two MPSD schools a month during the 2015-16 school year. 

Congratulations to Ms. Johnson and Mr. Brown! We are very proud of you!

Mary Swindell Named 2015 Outstanding Informal Science Educator

Congratulations to Mary Swindell, Assistant Director of Ross Collins Career and Technical Center and Science Instructional Specialist, for receiving the 2015 Outstanding Informal Science Educator Award from the Mississippi Science Teachers Association! Ms. Swindell will receive special recognition on October 27 at the Annual Convention of the Association. Way to go Mrs. Swindell!

Important Information for Parents of Third Grade Students

The Mississippi Legislature passed the Literacy-Based Promotion Act in 2013 to ensure that students exit the 3rd grade reading at or above grade level. Due to the Literacy Based Promotion Act, all 3rd grade students will take a test at the end of the year to determine promotion to 4th grade.

Northwest Middle School 2015-16 Cheerleaders

The Northwest Middle School cheerleaders attended camp at Mississippi State University this summer, and the squad earned a Superior Ribbon in Home Pom Dance, Superior Ribbon in Cheer and Chant , first place overall in small group for Extreme Dance Routine, third place overall in small group for Cheer, and third place overall in small group for Game Day Routine. Way to go Northwest!

The 2015-16 squad includes: Zaria Williams – Captain, Maya Bramlett - Co-Captain (All-American), Kacie Nabors - Co-Captain (All-American), Naomi Anderson, Kortnee Roberts, Brianna Gowdy, Jalen Thomas, and Tilleah Cole.

Golden Apple Award Nominations

MPSD is pleased to have five teachers from our district awarded Golden Apples since the program began at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year. The Golden Apple Awards will continue this year, so nominate your favorite teacher by visiting either www.meridianstar.com or www.wgbctv.com and clicking on the Golden Apple logo.

Plates will be $10 and will consist of catfish, 2 sides, dessert, bread, and beverage. Fish sandwiches will be $6. Pre-orders are encouraged, but walk-ups will be accepted. Delivery to groups with a $50 purchase is available.
