MHS Art Instructor Marsha Iverson Earned MAAE 2016 Exemplary Arts Service Award

Meridian High School Visual Art Instructor and Department Chair Marsha Iverson earned the Mississippi Alliance for Arts Education 2016 Exemplary Arts Service Award!

The Exemplary Arts Service Award recognizes individuals who have active participation in the development of or support for arts programs; leadership in developing partnerships between schools and the community for use of cultural resources such as visits to cultural institutions, organizations, and events; advocacy for the arts and arts-in-education at the school district, community, regional, or state levels; and financial or in-kind support of arts programs in a school district.

Mrs. Iverson was formally recognized with the Exemplary Arts Service Award on June 8, 2016, at the Whole Schools Summer Institute Awards Reception in Biloxi, MS.

With over 26 years in education and 20 years at Meridian High School, Mrs. Iverson initiated and founded the first National Art Honor Society in our state at MHS three years ago. The National Art Honor Society members design, develop, and teach children’s hands-on activities for the Meridian Museum of Art and the Meridian Council for the Arts. The students have also installed a collection of paintings for a permanent exhibit in the Anderson Hospital’s Pediatric Ward, created a mural for L.O.V.E.’S Kitchen, hosted the annual Empty Bowls Event to fund a children’s project for L.O.V.E.’S Kitchen, contributed artwork regularly to the Anderson Hospital’s rotating exhibit on the ground floor, and attended events at the Meridian Museum of Art to meet local, state, and national artists.

Mrs. Iverson has been awarded many arts related honors including the Thad Cochran Distinguished Arts Educator (Visual Art Teacher) Award for Mississippi Alliance for Arts Education in 2001, Arts Educator of the Year by the Meridian Council for the Arts, and the 2008 Volunteer of the Year for the Meridian Museum of Art. In addition, the Meridian High School Visual and Performing Arts Department recently won the “School of Excellence” award from MAAE.

She is a board member for the Mississippi Alliance for Arts Education and the Meridian Council for the Arts as well as a board member and education director for the Meridian Museum of Art. She also serves as a member of the Mississippi Art Educator’s Association.

Mrs. Iverson just completed her Masters of Science in Gifted, Talented, and Creative Curriculum.
