Magnolia Middle School Wins Award for Walk to School Challenge back button

Magnolia Middle School placed third in the state for the 2011 International Walk to School Day Challenge held on October 5. The Miss. Department of Transportation awarded the school with a plaque during a special ceremony held on February 8.

Magnolia Walk to School Day Coordinator and Physical Education Instructor Celia Allen said, “I am so proud of our Magnolia students for making the effort to participate in this health activity. When we get students moving that early in the day, it tends to stimulate their minds so that they do better in class and have a good attitude throughout the day.”

Out of the 417 students enrolled at Magnolia, 294 or 70.5 percent of them participated in the annual Walk to School Day event aimed to raise awareness of safety in walking to school.

“I am extremely proud of the students who participated and staff that worked hard to put this event together,” said Magnolia Principal Shannon Ruffin. “I know that this is just the start to greater success to come for Magnolia.”

Magnolia followed Lake Elementary in Pascagoula who had 98.91 percent participation and College Park Elementary in Gautier that had 75 percent participation, but Magnolia is the only middle school to ever place in the competition.

Walk to School was established in the U.S. in 1997 to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools, and the broader community.
