MHS Girls Win South State Power Lifting

The Meridian High School Girl’s Power Lifting team won their fourth straight South State match last night. They move on to compete at the State level on April 13, 2013 in Jackson. To read the full story in the Meridian Star, click here.

Emma Reeves Earns National Merit Finalist and Star Student Awards

MPSD would like to congratulate Emma Reeves, Meridian High School Senior, for becoming a National Merit Finalist and being named MHS’s Star Student.

Reeves earned a 31 on her ACT and maintains a 4.377 grade point average while being actively involved in many clubs and activities. She is planning to attend the University of Southern Mississippi in the fall to major in English and minor in Psychology.

Reeves chose MHS English teacher Shuana Waters as her Star Teacher.

Believe in Blue Day at Meridian High School

Mark your calendar to attend Believe in Blue Day at MHS on Thursday, March 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.!

Believe in Blue Day is all about highlighting all of the wonderful opportunities that MHS provides the youth of Meridian. Parents and community members are invited to tour the campus and new Multi-Purpose Building and learn about our new Small Learning Communities.

Seussical the Musical will be performed by MHS Theatre, Choral, and Band students at 9 a.m., 1 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.

Community members are asked to wear blue in support of this special day.

We hope you will join us on March 28!

Poplar Springs Librarian Bethany Garrett Earns National Board Certification

Congratulations to Poplar Springs Elementary School’s Librarian Bethany Garrett who recently earned National Board Certification. Her certification is in Literacy: Reading-Language Arts/Early and Middle Childhood.

MPSD has a total of 38 educators with National Board Certification including teachers, counselors, and speech therapists.

MHS Senior MeMe Huff Named to WTOK’s All Scholastic Sports Team

MeMe Huff is being honored as a member of WTOK’s All Scholastic Sports Team. Huff earned the honor for six years of outstanding play on the MHS Ladies Tennis and Soccer teams. She will continue her tennis and soccer careers by playing for Meridian Community College next year. Huff also maintains a grade point average of 4.1 while serving in the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Dusty Social Service Club. Health Occupations Student Society of American Students Earn Awards at District

HOSA students competed in District competition at the end of February at Meridian Community College and took home several awards.

Congratulations to the following students that are now eligible to compete in the HOSA State Conference in Natchez:

Tangier Trussell – 2nd place in Medical Reading

Corea Brown, Jazzmin Moore, and Cierra Spells – 4th place in Health Education (Dental Health)

Chelsi Stewart – 5th place in Clinicial Speciality (Pediatric Nursing)

DeJurnee Thomas – 5th place in Home Health Aid

ASM Material Camp 2013

The 2013 ASM Material Camp will be held at Meridian High School again this year from June 3 through 7, 2013.

This camp is designed for high school science, chemistry, physics, math, and technology teachers as well as middle school physical science teachers.

The course is free and includes four CEUs, materials, lunch, and snacks! This is made possible through the generous financial support of the Office of Naval Research, Mississippi State University, and the Navy League.

Congratulations to Poplar Springs Elementary School ArtQuest teacher Nancy Ray for being recently named the 2012 Volunteer of the Year by the Meridian Museum of Art! We are so proud of you!

Parkview Snoopy Center

Students will take a virtual field trip to Hershey, PA. They will take a walk through the museum, see the packaging process in the factory, take a ride on the roller coaster, get their picture taken in a photo booth, and they will receive a package of chocolate from the Hershey store.

Poplar Springs Elementary Piano Keyboard Open House

Monday, March 25 - 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.

PSE Auditorium

Through a Meridian Junior Auxiliary Mini Grant and private donations, a piano lab with 22 keyboards has been added to the Poplar Springs Elementary music program. Fifth grade students will be demonstrating, and parents and the community are invited to see this lab in action.

 

West Hills Elementary Third Grade MCT2 Workshop

Monday, March 25 – 5:00 to 5:30 p.m.

This is an informative workshop for parents to help them understand how to help their child prepare for the MCT2 (state test) in May.

Meridian High School Wildcat Players Present Seussical the Musical

Thursday, March 28 – 7:30 p.m.

MHS Auditorium

Cost: $7 for adults (18 and over), $5 for students, teachers (with ID), and military (with ID), and free for children 4 years old and under. Families of four will get a discounted price of $20.

The MHS Wildcat Players are joining forces with the MHS Choir and Band to present this musical as their spring production.

 

West Hills Elementary Fifth Grade MCT2 Prep Easter Egg Hunt

Thursday, March 28

Students hunt for Easter eggs and then work the problem found inside the egg in preparation for the state test in May.

 

Poplar Springs Elementary "Absolutely Abstract" Student Art Exhibit

Thursday, March 28 - 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Meridian Museum of Art

Third through fifth grade students at Poplar Springs have completed artwork with Artist in Residence Charlie Busler. This artwork will be exhibited at the Meridian Museum of Art. There will be an “Artist Talk” with Charlie Busler at 6 p.m.
