Ron Turner Named 2013 MPSD Parent of the Year back button

Ron Turner Named 2013 MPSD Parent of the Year

The Meridian Public School District has named Ronald Turner as 2013 Parent of the Year.

“Mr. Turner is a dedicated parent and strong community leader that commits a lot of time and effort to the Meridian Public School District,” said MPSD Superintendent Dr. Alvin Taylor. “I am pleased to honor him with this award.”

Turner’s dedication to the Meridian Public School District is seen in his tireless volunteer efforts. He serves as the voice of the Wildcats at the Meridian High School basketball games, plays an active role in the MHS Parent and Teacher Organization (PTO), helps with special events at the school including serving as a chaperone at the prom, and mentors youth.

He also meets monthly with Superintendent Taylor as a member of the “Step Up! Sign Up!” community group that works through various organizations to help increase tutoring, mentoring, and parental involvement within the district.

MHS Principal Victor Hubbard said, “Mr. Turner is truly a giver of his time, energy, and talents. He is loyal to Meridian High, and he is very supportive of our athletic programs as well as other school events.”

Turner is the Executive Director of the Meridian Housing Authority. He is a graduate of Bolton High School in Arlington, Tennessee and Lemoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee. He also holds a Public Housing Management Certification from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials.

“I currently serve on Dr. Taylor’s community leadership team, and I know that there are hundreds of parents who are just as passionate about the MPSD as I am,” said Turner. “So, I am humbled about being selected to receive this prestigious award.”

Turner has been married for 26 years to Angela Turner, and they have five children - Everette, Erica, Ronald II, Denzel , and Julius. Three of their five children are graduates of the Meridian Public School District - Erica, Ronald II and Denzel. Turner is a member of the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church where he currently serves as Superintendent of Sunday School, on the Deacon Board, and as “Hoops for Jesus” Youth Basketball Tournament Coordinator.
