Key Communicator-May 23, 2013 ------ All MPSD schools will dismiss early on Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24. Elementary schools dismiss at 12:40 p.m. and Middle and High Schools dismiss at 1:10 p.m. Friday, May 24 is the last day of school for students and teachers. ------ Please join us on Friday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Ray Stadium to cheer on over 300 graduates. We hope you will come out to support the class of 2013! Congratulations to all of our graduates- we are so proud of you! ------ Ron Turner was recognized at the May meeting of the Board of Trustees as the MPSD Parent of the Year. Congratulations to Mr. Turner! We appreciate all that you do for the school district! For more details and a list of each school’s Parent of the Year, click here. ------ MSU-Meridian recognized five students at the Spring Commencement Ceremony for being chosen 2012-13 Outstanding Graduates. Amanda Hanegan, MPSD and MHS Teacher of the Year, was among those honored. Mrs. Hanegan received a Master’s of Arts in Teaching Community College Education degree during the Ceremony as well. MPSD Administrator of the Year and Principal of Poplar Springs Elementary, LaVonda Germany, was selected as Mississippi’s Third Congressional District Administrator of the Year! This is a HUGE honor as Mrs. Germany was chosen from among the state’s elite administrators. She is one of four that interviewed for the Mississippi Administrator of the Year title, and we are still awaiting those results. MPSD could not be more proud of Mrs. Germany! ------ Congratulations to the following 2012-13 MPSD retirees: We want to thank each and every one of the retirees for their dedication and service to the Meridian Public School District and the students of Meridian. You have touched the lives of many, and we will miss you greatly! Good luck on the next chapter! ------ The East Mississippi Business Development Corporation recently awarded two Ross Collins students with the Spring Head of the Class Awards. The Highest Overall Career and Technical Award went to Health Sciences II student DeQuon Anderson. The Most Improved Career and Technical Award went to Construction Technology student Brandon Lee. To read the full story from WTOK, click here. ------ Forty-one seniors from Meridian High School enrolled in Economics and Government classes toured the State Supreme Court Building and the State Capital recently. During the tour of the Capital, the students were recognized in both the Senate and House chambers. House Representative Toby Barker, a 2000 graduate of MHS, explained the work of the Legislature to the students. The tour was hosted by Rep. Charles L. Young, Jr. ------ Three Meridian High School basketball players recently signed to play on the college level next season -Dennis Miles, East Mississippi Community College; Jarricus Hubbard, Holmes Community College; and Torlorf Thomas, Georgia Southern University. Today, four MHS Track athletes will sign to move on to the next level as well - Chauncey Wells and Shaciarra Drake, Grambling University; Jamal Elkins, Concordia University; and Boderick Oliver, Mississippi State University. Congratulations to these outstanding students! ------ Congratulations to the following Ross Collins students that recently placed in the Future Business Leaders of America State Conference in Jackson, MS: ------ Ross Collins HOSA students recently attended the Mississippi State Leadership Conference in Natchez, MS. Congratulations to the following students for earning top spots in the competition: DeJurnee Thomas, 2nd place Home Health and Top 10% Healthcare Issues Exam; Tangier Trussell, 1st place Medical Reading; Cierra Spells, Top 10% Healthcare Issues Exam; and Chelsi Stewart, 2nd place Clinical Specialty-Pediatric Nursing. ------ Northwest Middle School recently held their annual Beauty and Beau pageant. Public school students from all across state entered creative pieces into the 2013 Mississippi PTA Reflections Program. The Reflections Program was started in 1969 as a means to encourage students to explore their creative talents and a venue for them to express themselves through art. First place winners in all categories and divisions will represent the state of Mississippi at the National level.
