Poplar Springs Elementary Students Win 2013- 2014 Reflections Program Awards

By: Mississippi PTA Reflections Chairperson, Dr. Arcola W. Sullivan

Students from all across the state entered creative pieces into the 2013-2014 Mississippi Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Reflections Program. Four students from Poplar Springs Elementary School received awards at the state level. The theme for this year’s Reflections competition is ‘Believe, Dream, Inspire.’

The students are:

Ava Durgin --- 1st place music composition category intermediate division for her entry entitled, “The Wishing Star.”

Laney Turnage --- 1st place visual arts category intermediate division for her entry entitled, “I Dream of a Greener World.”

Caroline Prewitt --- 2nd place literature category intermediate division for her entry entitled, “My Mind.”

Wyatt Davison --- 1st place dance choreography intermediate division for her entry entitled, “Being Me.”

Students will receive state awards on April 26, 2014 at the Mississippi Reflections Arts program which will be held at Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi. First place winners in all categories and divisions will represent the state of Mississippi at the National level. Prizes at the National level include an all-expense-paid trip to Austin, Texas to attend the national convention, monetary awards, scholarships, certificates and other prizes.

The Reflections Program was started in 1969 as a means to encourage students to explore their creative talents and a venue for them to express themselves through art. It is open to all students in pre-kindergarten through the twelfth grade. Entries are accepted in six categories including dance choreography, music composition, film, literature, visual arts and photography.

Students can use their artwork as a part of their academic portfolio. The artwork of national winners is displayed permanently in the US Department of Education and online in the National Reflections Library for all to see.

Artworks are judged at the local levels prior to being sent to state competition. Judges at the state level are selected from a pool of professionals in each category from across Mississippi.

Mississippi has participated in the National Reflections Program each year since its inception. Mississippi PTA takes great pride in showcasing the many talented students in the state.
