December Teachers of the Month

Congratulations to Shelley Whittington and Jayne Walker who were honored today with a surprise classroom visit, $25 gift card to Applebees from Nino’s Daycare, and poinsettias from Cartoons and Balloons.

Poplar Springs –Shelley Whittington is a Kindergarten teacher at Poplar Springs Elementary, and she is a master teacher! Mrs. Whittington sets high expectations for her students and then does everything she can to be sure they are all successful academically and behaviorally. She is also a great communicator with her parents. The parents of her students know the expectations in her classroom, know how to help their child, and know what’s going on in her classroom. Within the school, she serves as a member of the school leadership team, as a mentor to new teachers, and is a key member of her grade level team. Shelley Whittington is a wonderful example of how Poplar Springs shows Panda P.O.W.E.R.!

Meridian High –Jayne Walker was selected as “Teacher of the Month” because of her positive attitude towards the changes that come with the new Common Core standards.   Mrs. Walker represented the MHS English II Department this summer by working with the District Curriculum and Instruction Department to help develop lesson plans and pacing guides for the new Common Core Assessments. Mrs. Walker has taken this same positive attitude into her classroom to where not only is her instruction is engaging but it is also meaningful. Her students appreciate the structure that is in place in her class and they rise to the occasion of producing quality work.

Mayor Percy Bland, Meridian Parks and Recreation Director Kelvin McGruder, and local businesses, Cartoons and Balloons and Nino's Daycare, will be recognizing an outstanding teacher or staff member from two MPSD schools a month during the 2014-15 school year.

Congratulations to Shelley Whittington and Jayne Walker! We are very proud of you!
