Rhonda Burrage Named 2016 Milken Educator Award Winner

Rhonda Burrage, Magnolia Middle School math teacher, was surprised during a special assembly last week and named a 2016 Milken Educator Award winner. The prestigious award also comes with $25,000!

Ms. Burrage is the only Milken Award winner in Mississippi this year, and she is also the 2015-16 MPSD Teacher of the Year!

MHS Students to Host Journalism Camp

The staff of the Meridian High School newspaper, The Wildcat, will be hosting a journalism camp for children between the ages of 9 and 12 on January 30th at the R.D. Harris Building from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Children will be able to pick two of three classes offered during the program. The classes include Sports Profiling, Photo Editing, and Digital Photography. Each child will learn the basics of photography during the camp.

The cost of camp will be $25 which includes a certificate, snack, press badge, attendance, and t-shirt.

January Teachers of the Month – Stacey Miller & Terkita Kennedy

Congratulations to Stacey Miller, Meridian High School, and Terkita Kennedy, Ross Collins Career and Technical Center, who were honored last Friday with a surprise classroom visit, flowers, and $25 gift card.

Meridian High – Stacey Miller
Mrs. Miller teaches Science at Meridian High School where she builds a great rapport with her students. Her delivery of instruction is very engaging allowing the students to make connections from the classroom to real life applications. Mrs. Miller is a team player and helps others by leading professional development sessions on classroom management.

Ross Collins – Terkita Kennedy
Ms. Kennedy teaches Health Science at Ross Collins. Ms. Kennedy’s top priority is the needs of her students, and she has a gift of reaching students at their level and moving them forward. She is extremely supportive of her colleagues by giving of her time and support as needed, and she leads the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Club.

Mayor Percy Bland, Meridian Parks and Recreation Director Kelvin McGruder, and local businesses, Cartoons and Balloons and Nino's Daycare, will be recognizing an outstanding teacher or staff member from two MPSD schools a month during the 2015-16 school year.

Congratulations to Mrs. Miller and Ms. Kennedy! We are very proud of you!

MPSD Students Take Top Honors in MCC’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest

Each year, Meridian Community College holds an essay contest for students in our area in conjunction with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Celebration. This year's contest was entitled "Breaking Barriers: The Movement Continues."

MPSD is pleased to announce that seven out of the nine winners were from our District! First place winners Dorrian Stringfellow and Nasha Hood presented their essays during the Celebration.

2016 District Reading Fair Winners

The Meridian Public School District hosted the District Reading Fair on Thursday, January 21, 2016. Reading Fair winners from each school came together to compete to move on to the Regional Reading Fair which will be held in Jackson, MS in February.

MPSD “Biggest Loser” Competition Winners

MPSD recently held an employee wellness competition entitled the “Biggest Loser.” Congratulations to first place winner Narkeeta Wesley, T.J. Harris Lower, and second place winner Alicia Bamber, Marion Park! Great job to all who participated! Special thanks to the MPSD Employee Wellness Committee for putting this competition together.

Meridian High School Band Selected to March in Governor Bryant’s Inaugural Parade 

Meridian High School’s “Greatest Band in All the Land” was the only band selected to march in Governor Phil Bryant’s Inaugural Parade earlier this month. Way to go MHS!

Registration for pre-kindergarten for the upcoming school year will take place from February 1 to March 11, 2016. If you have a child who will be 4 years old on or before September 1, 2016, please contact the Federal Programs Office at 601.484.4960.
