Update on the Superintendent Search Process from the Mississippi School Boards Association:

The Meridian Public School District School Board contracted with the Mississippi School Boards Association to conduct a search for the Superintendent of the Meridian Public School District.

A meeting was held with the professional staff and the stakeholders in the Meridian Public School District on April 5, 2016, to give them the opportunity to participate in determining the criteria to be used in the employment process for the Superintendent. Surveys were also electronically available for the stakeholders. The members of the Board were surveyed to determine the qualities the Superintendent should possess.

The Board agreed on the criteria which was used for the screening and reporting process. A brochure about the Meridian Superintendent vacancy was prepared by the Mississippi Schools Boards Association (MSBA) which was posted online along with the application on March 1, 2016. Dr. Mike Waldrop, Executive Director of the Mississippi Schools Boards Association, sent an email to 2,354 people on the MSBA mailing list announcing the search and requesting assistance in publicizing the vacancy. Dr. Waldrop wrote personal letters to possible applicants as well. Contacts were also made with some of the representatives of the National Association of Superintendent Searches.

The deadline to receive applications was established to be April 8, 2016. All completed applications received which were postmarked on or before April 8, 2016, were accepted and processed.

There are twenty-three applicants for the Meridian Superintendent’s position. Among the applicants are three superintendents, three former superintendents, four assistant/deputy superintendents, an executive director of instruction, a chief academic officer, a director of student support services and dropout prevention, a federal programs director, a director of athletics/students activities, five school principals, an adjunct professor, a public school teacher, and an education chair. Fifteen of the applicants have a doctorate degree.

A complete and detailed report was made to the Meridian Public School District Board by Dr. Mike Waldrop, Executive Director, and Mrs. Denotris Jackson, Assistant Executive Director of the Mississippi Schools Boards Association, and Dr. Harold Fisher, MSBA consultant. The Board received the report and has taken it under advisement to study and to determine the next course of action.


The original projected timeline for the Superintendent search is listed below:

Ongoing to March 1, 2016 – MPSD Board of Trustees is collaborating with MSBA to set the applicant criteria and create the necessary supporting documents

March 1, 2016 – MPSD Superintendent search officially launches

April 5, 2016 – Town-Hall Meetings to be held in the Meridian High School Auditorium

·         MPSD Staff – 4:00 p.m.

·         MPSD Administrators – 5:00 p.m.

·         Parents and Community Members – 6:00 p.m. (if any staff member is unable to attend the session at 4:00 p.m., he or she is welcome to attend the 6:00 p.m. meeting)

April 8, 2016 – Deadline for Applications

May 16-31, 2016 – Interview Process
