Meridian Public School District to Host Dyslexia Informational Session

The Meridian Public School District will host a Dyslexia Informational Session on Tuesday, October 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the Auditorium of Poplar Springs Elementary School as part of Dyslexia Awareness Month.

The Dyslexia Informational Session is designed to provide parents and guardians with resources and strategies and will include team members from the Mississippi Department of Education’s Intervention Services as well as a personal testimony from Meridian High School Coach Demetrius Hill.

“We would like to invite parents and community members to the Dyslexia Information Session to learn more about Dyslexia and tools and resources that you can use to help your child be successful,” said Shelia Radcliffe, MPSD Dyslexia Interventionist.

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant recently issued a proclamation declaring October 2016 as Dyslexia Awareness Month.

Having been forced to repeat third grade because of dyslexia, I know all too well how it can frustrate and humiliate a child. I am eternally grateful to the teachers who recognized that a little extra help could make all the difference in the world. Every child deserves that kind of specialized instruction. That’s why I was so proud to sign House Bill 1031 in 2012, which requires kindergartners and first-graders be tested for dyslexia. Additionally, the law empowers parents with options that ensure their children have opportunity available to rise above this condition and receive a quality education that will lead to a productive and satisfying life. I thank everyone involved in organizing this workshop. You are making a difference,” said Bryant.

Door prizes will include two tickets to Daniel Tigers Neighborhood Live and Dr. Seuss’ The Cat and the Hat which are upcoming productions at the MSU Riley Center.
