West Hills Elementary School Donated $2,311.51 to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society back button

Mrs. Alford's second grade class pictured above raised the most money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society during the Pennies for Patients program. Way to go, students!

West Hills Elementary School participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program again this year. According to the event’s coordinator, West Hills Lead Teacher Tawanda McClelland, this service – learning program gave students the unique experience of working together to help raise awareness and funds in honor of thousands of children and adults fighting against blood cancers.

West Hills’ students and staff raised $2,311.51 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. For three weeks all of the school’s 530 students collected coins in their penny boxes. The students also participated in a variety of fundraisers including Team Up Against Leukemia, Penny Wars, and Tape Principal Knight to the Wall.

Mrs. LaShonda Alford’s second grade class collected the most funds with a total of $280.61. This program was very personal to Mrs. Alford because her son, T.J., was diagnosed with t-cell lymphoma when he was an eighth grade student in July 2007. Mrs. Alford shared T.J.’s story and arranged for T.J. to come to the school and meet the second graders. This heartfelt visit helped the students realize the importance of supporting the program.

The following classes will receive pennants from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for their funding amounts:

Silver Pennants $200 - $299

Mrs. LaShonda Alford’s 2nd Grade Class

Mrs. Amy Burkes’ Pre-Kindergarten Class

Mrs. Rebecca Davis’ Fourth Grade Class

Bronze Pennants $100 - $199

Mrs. Audrey Parsons’ Kindergarten Class

Mrs. Brittany Scott’s 1st Grade Class

Mrs. Rhonda’s Scott’s 2nd Grade Class

Mrs. Jessica’s Ethridge’s 4th Grade Class

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is one step closer to finding a cure for blood cancers and improving the quality of life for patients and their families thanks to the efforts of the students, staff, and parents of West Hills Elementary School!

Ms. Burke's Pre-K students participated in the Penny Wars competition as part of the Pennies for Patients program.
